Our lady of Apostles’ Hospital Jos is a faith-based hospital owned by the Catholic Archdiocese of Jos and manned by the Our Lady of Fatima (OLF) Sisters. It is one of the pioneer hospitals in Jos and began as a small maternity clinic along Church Street at the present St. Theresa’s church by the Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Apostles’ (OLA) from where it derived the name ‘Maternity’ in 1943. This was in response to the unmet needs of Maternal and Child health care within the immediate community. Ever since the Hospital has continued to give quality Health Services to the teaming Nigerian Public within and outside the State.
With the increasing number of patients requiring specialized secondary / tertiary care over the years, there was need to meet people’s health care in an optimal manner by way of ensuring that the requirements for quality, equality, relevance and cost effectiveness are met in the delivery of Health Services. Thus the Hospital evolved to provide secondary and tertiary care and has become a center of specialized medical care not only in Plateau State but in Nigeria at large. At present, OLA Hospital provides services at the secondary / tertiary care level, not only in the maternal and child health along with immunization programs, but also in general medical practice to an average of 69,500 patients annually.
Besides providing clinical services, the Hospital is also actively involved in healthcare human capacity development, the prestigious School of Midwifery was established in 1955 to cater for the much needed manpower capacity in the Health sector and meet the rising demand in the area of maternal and child health. A Residency Programme also commenced in 2007 providing post graduate training for Medical Officers in Family Medicine.
The Hospital has equally expanded in various areas of health care delivery with over 300 staff Strength. It is now a 130 bed capacity facility with six lie-in wards comprising of Male medical and surgical, Female medical and surgical, ` Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Special Care Baby Unit and Amenity wards.
